Lagos, 2022
What initially began as a four-week family trip to Nigeria quickly transformed into a mini photography series.
As I ventured through the southeast of Nigeria, I found myself irresistibly drawn to the captivating people I encountered.
Intrigued by their daily lives, I captured the community around me. Journeying through the supermarkets, backstreets, markets, playgrounds, churches, hotels and petrol stations from Festac (Lagos) to Umuahia (Abia State). The unpredictable nature of Nigeria's streets altered my photographic approach, at times I was limited to capturing images from a moving vehicle which forced me to think creatively about framing and composition.
This unique perspective allowed me to capture unexpected scenes that might have been missed on foot.
As I delved deeper into Lagos’ landscape, I began to notice parallels between the bustling streets of Lagos and the hustle and bustle of London. The shared spirit of resilience, the energy of crowds, and the creative expression evident in everyday life resonated across both cities.
After a decade hiatus, I finally arrived in the luscious city of Umuahia.
Stepping into my grandmother's home, a sanctuary brimming with cherished memories, echoes of laughter and shared stories. Now old enough (24) to grasp who was around me, I reconnected and created bonds with family members I wasn't aware of, or am now able to engage with. The most significant was engaging with daily 6 am runs on the hilly roads of Umuahia with my Uncle Okey.
My time in Umuahia was a profound exploration of self-discovery, cultural reconnection, and a celebration of my cousin's wedding.
Returning home always allows me to reflect and re-evaluate life around me, offering a welcome respite from the pace of London. The tranquillity of Umuahia, the simplicity of daily life, and the genuine connections with my family provided a much-needed pause, allowing me to appreciate the simple joys and enduring values that truly matter. The richness of tradition, hospitality, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit of the Umuahia community will forever be etched in my memory, serving as a constant reminder of my roots.
As my time drew to a close, I carried with me a profound sense of gratitude for the warmth and hospitality of the Nigerian people. The lessons learned, the connections forged, and the memories made will forever be cherished, forever shaping my understanding of myself and the world around me.
